The
business model uses the internet and internet ecommerce as a platform. Within certain industries it has now come to be known as a "disruptive technology". Meaning, a new technology that disrupts , shakes up, or completely turns upside an industry that has operated and performed unchallenged.
To understand this new phrase let's examine some industries that have recently been disrupted.
The computer
business. Michael Dell came onto the computer scene with a new concept in selling computers. His model was custom computers. Ordered to specifications, delivered to the customers home, and at a fraction of the price of store bought computers which offered no custom options.
Plus DELL operated with only about 10 days worth of inventory (parts) to build its products, while other computer companies had millions and millions dollars worth of inventory spread out in retail stores.
It wouldn't be long before companies like Compaq were put out of
business because they could not compete with Dell's
business model. What happens to the millions and millions of unsold computers?
The trav el industry. Traditionally travelers or traveling
business professionals relied on "brick and mortar" agencies and would contact their travel agent for assistance with their travel plans.
That changed after companies like Expedia, Priceline, and Orbitz and others offered the same services and products online, giving the customer more options and the ability to compare prices between accomindations, and much more. This cut out the middle man/woman and in the process has put many travel agencies out of
business.
The mo vie rental industry. Whenever you would want to watch a mo vie, you would have to go to the local video rental store, walk around, and select a movie and take it home to view. Then, you would have to return it when it was due. How many times have we forgotten to return mo vie on time only to pay late fees!
That has all changed thanks to a company calledNetflix. They offer different plans in which the customer can have the movie for as long as they want without the worry of late fees. The convenience of home delivery is a big plus.
It is no wonder that video rental stores are shutting their doors in record numbers. Again, another disruptive technology shakes up an industry.
